At the end of each olive harvest in the occupied West Bank village of Qusra, Ibrahim Wadi leads his family in making Nabulsi soap, a staple of many Palestinian homes that is prepared using a centuries-old technique. He gathers relatives, old and young, and instructs them to bring olive oil from their homes so that they can make it together. While some help, others sing, drink, and eat snacks in what has become a cherished annual tradition.

But this year there will be no soap.

Ibrahim Wadi, 63, and his son Ahmed, 26, were killed on Oct. 12 2023 by Israeli settlers, who Palestinians say are taking advantage of the international community’s focus on the war in Gaza to carry out attacks in the West Bank with impunity.

🇵🇸 Israeli settlers rampage across Palestinian town in latest West Bank pogrom

More than 70 armed Jewish settlers invaded the Palestinian town of Jit in the occupied West Bank on 16 August, firing bullets and tear gas at residents and setting several homes and cars and other property on fire, CNN reported.

Settlers killed 23-year-old Rashid Sedda during the pogrom. The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health confirmed the 23-year-old Palestinian died due to a gunshot wound to the chest.

“We have attacks but nothing to this level,” the head of Jit’s village council, Nasser Sedda, told CNN. “We haven’t seen anything like this before, and without a prior warning. They caught the people off guard – women, children, and elders were there.”

🇵🇸 Armed Israeli settlers attacked the Palestinian town of Jit in the occupied West Bank, killing at least one man and wounding several others, overnight Thursday.

The Palestinian health ministry identified Rashid Mahmoud Abdel Qader Sadda, 23, as the victim. He was shot in the chest by one of the armed settlers.

The Palestinian Authority’s foreign ministry decried what it called “organised state terrorism” on Jit as the settlers hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails while storming the Palestinian town.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the settlers will be held accountable, and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant called the attack “violent, radical riots”.

In a surprising change of tone, Israel’s far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, called it “criminal, anarchist violence”.
