โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ’ฐ Google Hit With Another Antitrust Fine in Europe

The European Commission announced yet another #antitrust fine against #Google today, imposing a โ‚ฌ1.49 billion ($1.69b) penalty for unfairly shielding its AdSense advertising platform from competition. "Today the Commission has fined Google โ‚ฌ1.49 billion for illegal misuse of its dominant position in the market for the brokering of online search adverts. Google has cemented its dominance in online search adverts and shielded itself from competitive pressure by imposing anti-competitive contractual restrictions on third-party websites", commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in an official statement.

The European Commissionโ€™s latest ruling against Google is by no means the first time that the EUโ€™s watchdog has taken action against an American tech company. In fact, Google itself got a taste of EU antitrust regulation as recently as last year. In July 2018, the European Commission hit Google with a record-breaking โ‚ฌ4.3 billion fine for allegations related to #Android after having fined the company โ‚ฌ2.4 billion ($2.7b) for anticompetitive behavior related to Google Shopping in July 2017.

As the following chart illustrates, other tech giants have felt the wrath of the European Commission as well. #Microsoft alone has been fined four times over the past two decades including three times for allegedly ignoring previous antitrust sanctions and for breaking promises made in an earlier antitrust settlement. The EUโ€™s competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, has made U.S. tech companies a central focus, cracking down on anticompetitive behavior, tax avoidance and mishandling of user privacy.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ›Ž American consumers spent more on Airbnb than on Hilton last year
And that means Airbnb now owns about 20 percent of the entire US consumer lodging market!

#Airbnb has long felt like an existential threat to hotel companies. New data shows that it actually is one.

US consumers spent more money on Airbnb last year than than they did on Hilton and its subsidiary brands like DoubleTree and Embassy Suites, according to new data from Second Measure, a company that analyzes billions of dollars in anonymized debit and credit card purchases. Their Airbnb spending is even catching up to Marriott, the worldโ€™s largest hotel company, which added to its revenue by acquiring Starwood hotels in 2016.

The data shows roughly 30 percent growth last year in US consumer spending on Airbnb, which is expected to go public next year and is currently valued at about $38 billion company.

Much of that growth, according to Second Measure, is coming from travelers who live in the Central US. Currently about a third of Airbnbโ€™s US customers are from populous coastal states California, New York and Florida. Thatโ€™s a departure from 2012 when people from those states made up half its customers.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ›ซ Discovering Holiday Destinations

Thereโ€™s no shortage of user-generated content (UGC) on #SocialMedia that keeps friends and family updated and allows users to save a snapshot of their experiences; two thirds post about their holiday on social media, with 4 in 10 posting while on the holiday.

This has a huge impact on vacationersโ€™ decisions. Consumers are actually more likely to discover #travel destinations through content their peers share on social media โ€“ whether thatโ€™s photos/videos (37%) or recommendations (32%) โ€“ than branded travel ads (24%).
