β€‹β€‹πŸ—£ The State of Chinese Voice Assistants

China is the second-largest consumer market in the world, hitting $4.3T in consumer expenditure in 2016 alone (for reference, the US ranked first with $12.5T, and Japan third with $2.7T).

The Chinese smart home market will reach nearly $23B in 2018, according to Juniper Research. #SmartSpeakers and #AI voice assistants are becoming an integral part of that.

Now that smart speakers are becoming commonplace, the early entrant, #Amazon, is losing its market share β€” and not just to its rival #Google, but to newer players emerging in China.

β€‹β€‹πŸ€– Android's Dominance

Ten years ago, on September 23, 2008, the T-Mobile G1 made its debut, marking the birth hour of #Android. More than a year after #Apple had released the first #iPhone, Android’s debut wasn’t as spectacular and, as opposed to the iPhone, the first Android device still had a physical keyboard. But #Google’s open approach to building a mobile platform quickly proved to be successful and it took less than three years for Android to become the number 1 platform in the booming smartphone market.

β€‹β€‹πŸ’° The Future of Google's Revenue

#Google introduced several new products at its big hardware event on Tuesday. Among the devices were the new Pixel 3 phones, a new tablet called Pixel Slate and a smart home device called Google Home Hub.

While Google’s hardware ambitions are still limited and widely considered a means to an end (which is to collect more data and sell more advertising), the range of the company’s products and services has widened significantly over the years (with companies such as Access, Calico, CapitalG, GV, Nest, Verily, #Waymo and X).

#Google’s many side-activities have steadily grown over the years and in 2017, the company’s non-advertising revenue reached $15.5 billion, up from just $667 million in 2008. More importantly though, the percentage of Google’s revenue that didn’t come from advertising sales grew from 3.1% in 2008 to 14% last year, indicating that the search giant can no longer be considered a one trick pony.

β€‹β€‹πŸ” The War of Search Engines

Nearly 30 million searches are entered every day in the search box of #DuckDuckGo. Unlike #Google, this search engine does not collect user data and does not use personalised advertising.

This, and probably the steadily growing list of data scandals has been assisting a sustained upward trend for the past few years. In 2015, the milestone of ten million searches in one day was cracked for the first time. Two years later, it was already 20 million and in October 2018 it is almost at 30 million.

Nevertheless, compared to Google, these are still very small figures - according to TechCrunch, the search giant handles at least 3 billion search requests a day.

β€‹β€‹πŸ€³ Stickiest Social Media Platforms

While #Snapchat may lack #Facebook’s massive user numbers, its efforts to create an engaging app continue to show signs of success. While Facebook’s 69% stickiness still tops the list, Snapchat racks of a 43% stickiness rating, placing it comfortably ahead of larger competitors like #Google Hangouts (37% stickiness) and #Instagram (35% stickiness).

❗️ Stickiness is Verto’s measure of user engagement, comparing daily users to monthly users.

πŸ’° Amazon Challenges Ad Duopoly

According to a new eMarketer report, digital ad spending in the United States will exceed traditional media spending, e.g. TV, print and radio ads, for the first this year. Boosted by the ongoing mobile #advertising boom, digital ad spending is expected to grow 19 percent to $129 billion in 2019.

While the digital ad market is still dominated by #Google and #Facebook, who account for roughly 60 percent of total spending, a third company is challenging the de-facto duopoly of the world’s largest search and social media companies. Online retail behemoth #Amazon has quietly built a billion-dollar ad business which is growing at a rate of 50 percent per year.

πŸ“± Top App Categories Worldwide for Q4 2018 by Downloads - Google Play

Games was also the top category worldwide on #Google Play in Q4 2018 with more than 7.25 billion installs, followed by Tools, Entertainment, Communication, and Social.

Games saw modest growth on #GooglePlay in Q4, with installs increasing 3 percent year-over-year. The Social category grew 53 percent year-over-year, surpassing Photography to take the No. 5 spot. This change was driven by enormous growth of social media apps in India, specifically #TikTok, along with two other ByteDance-owned apps, Helo and Vigo Video.

β€‹β€‹πŸ’° Google Hit With Another Antitrust Fine in Europe

The European Commission announced yet another #antitrust fine against #Google today, imposing a €1.49 billion ($1.69b) penalty for unfairly shielding its AdSense advertising platform from competition. "Today the Commission has fined Google €1.49 billion for illegal misuse of its dominant position in the market for the brokering of online search adverts. Google has cemented its dominance in online search adverts and shielded itself from competitive pressure by imposing anti-competitive contractual restrictions on third-party websites", commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in an official statement.

The European Commission’s latest ruling against Google is by no means the first time that the EU’s watchdog has taken action against an American tech company. In fact, Google itself got a taste of EU antitrust regulation as recently as last year. In July 2018, the European Commission hit Google with a record-breaking €4.3 billion fine for allegations related to #Android after having fined the company €2.4 billion ($2.7b) for anticompetitive behavior related to Google Shopping in July 2017.

As the following chart illustrates, other tech giants have felt the wrath of the European Commission as well. #Microsoft alone has been fined four times over the past two decades including three times for allegedly ignoring previous antitrust sanctions and for breaking promises made in an earlier antitrust settlement. The EU’s competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, has made U.S. tech companies a central focus, cracking down on anticompetitive behavior, tax avoidance and mishandling of user privacy.

πŸ“± Worldwide Mobile App Revenue

Global app revenue reached $39 billion in the first half of 2019, that means an increase of 15% compared to the same period of 2018.

Consumers spent an estimated $25.5 billion globally on #Apple’s #AppStore during the first half, an increase of 13.2% YoY from $22.6 billion in Q1 and Q2 of 2018. The amount generated by Apple’s platform was approximately 80% greater than #Google Play’s estimated gross revenue of $14.2 billion for the half. πŸ” Google: The Most Popular Search on Bing

Poor #Bing. The beleaguered search engine with dreams of world domination never really had a chance against its all-conquering competitor, #Google. Adding insult to injury, analysis by SEO experts Ahrefs has revealed that in 2019, the search Bing is most often tasked with is pointing its disloyal users in the direction of 'google'.

As of July, the search engine dealt with 44.4 million such queries from around the world, far more than the second most frequent - 'youtube' was searched for 33.3 million times. In another blow for Bing's owner #Microsoft, the fifth most common search was people looking for help with Windows 10.
