ββπ§ Spotify's first day on NYSE
Eschewing the typical #IPO song and dance in favour of a direct listing, music streamer #Spotify made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange (#NYSE) yesterday in one of the most anticipated tech-related offerings since Snapβs IPO in March of last year.
If first impressions count for anything, Spotifyβs first day of public trading was mixed. Shares closed down about 10% from their opening price, but above the reference price first set by the NYSE.
Hereβs how things shook out:
- NYSE set a reference price of $132
- Shares made their debut with an opening price of $165.90
- Shares peaked at $169 shortly after trading began
- Shares closed at $149.01
π BONUS: Here's How $1 Flows From Spotify to Recording Artists
Each song streamed on Spotify is worth a fraction of a cent, and the ultimate payday for artists is as dependent on their record deal as on their stream count. This summary, based on figures from 2016, examines the path of a hypothetical dollar as it makes its way to three types of artists.

ββπ΅ Music-Streaming: Who Pays Best?
In recent years, on-demand #Music Streaming has emerged as a possible solution for the industryβs pains and after years of decline, the music industry has returned to growth. But despite looking like the music industryβs lifeline, streaming services such as Spotify have often been criticized in the past for not paying artists adequately.
The following chart by Statista shows that a single stream is in fact of little value. However, there is a substantial difference between the many services competing for the listenersβ money. Whilst #Spotify is constantly keen on cutting royalties, providers like #Tidal or #AppleMusic are offering substantially higher per-stream rates for artists.

ββπ΅ Music Streaming Yet to Prove Premium Worth
For every #music streamer who pays, there are 3.6 who donβt, preferring a free trial or ad-supported service. Streaming may be more popular than ever, but thereβs a lag in converting these listeners to paying listeners. As well as freemium tiers, account sharing has a role in this.
Diving into the users for each service, paid-for services like #AppleMusic and #Tidal see the highest levels of sharing, allowing friends and family to access them without paying for an account.

βββ οΈ Music Piracy is Down More than 50% since 2013
Due to investments by DiMAβs members in creating licensed digital music services, consumers are able to legally access creative works with more ease than ever before.
Back in 2013, shortly after #Spotifyβs launch in the US, music P2P penetration stood at 9.8 percent. At the end of 2017 streaming music revenues were four times larger than in 2013, while P2P penetration was less than half of its 2013 rate. Quite simply, streaming is taking away most of the incentive for piracy, pushing piracy to the margins.

ββπΆ Music Industry Streaming Revenues
Revenues from streaming #Music grew 28% YoY to $3.4 billion for the first half of 2018.
This broad category includes revenues from subscription services (such as paid versions of #Spotify, #AppleMusic, #Amazon, #TIDAL, and others), digital and customized radio services (like #Pandora, #SiriusXM, and other Internet radio), and ad-supported on-demand streaming services (such as #YouTube, #Vevo, and ad-supported Spotify). The overwhelming majority of the industryβs revenue growth during the period came from streaming music.
Paid subscriptions have become the biggest format for music by revenue. Year-over-year growth of 33% brought total subscription revenues to $2.5 billion. So ΒΎ of recording industry revenue came from streaming, and ΒΎ of that from paid subscriptions. Despite far few users, subscription streaming vastly out performed ad-supported revenues.

π΅ Streaming Dominates Music Industry Revenue
The #music industry is generating the lion share of its revenue from streaming. A recent Recording Industry Association of America report found that three quarters of all revenue in the industry comes from streaming services like #Spotify. Last year RIAA reported that only 65 percent of revenue came from streaming, pointing to how prevalent and essential streaming has become to making money in music.
Overall revenue from streaming music grew by 30 percent year-over-year, hitting a total of $7.4 billion for 2018. While the growth seems to be ramping up, the industry is rebounding from a low. This year is the first time the industry is even nearing what its total revenue was over a decade ago. The major reasons for the slump in recent years has been the digitization of music circulated on the internet.
