โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“บ The Largest Pay-TV providers in the US at the End of Q2 2018

According to data compiled by the Leichtman Research Group, the largest pay-TV providers (or subscription-based #TV services) in the US ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, representing approximately 95% of all subscribers, had 91.3 million subscribers at the end of Q2 2018, down 400k since the end of the Q1. Meanwhile #Netflix, arguably the biggest threat to the entire industry, ended the Q2 with 57.4 million domestic subscribers.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ˜ Netflix is Responsible for 15% of Global Internet Traffic

According to a new report by Sandvine, the web application responsible for the world's most downstream traffic is #Netflix with 15%. #Youtube isn't too far behind with 11.4% and further back but still with a significant share, #Amazon Prime Video is responsible for 3.7%.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“บ Netflix on the Right International Track

Although the US ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ has always been the main source of #Netflix's financial success, company's Q3 figures shows the still growing profitability of the international streaming side of the business.

In Q1 of this year though, there was a big increase in the contribution margin of 'international streaming' and this increased again slightly in Q2 before a second more significant jump in this latest quarter - reaching 17.1%.

These increases appear to be due to revenues outgrowing the cost of revenues (49% to 28%). Marketing is still a big part of Netflix's international expansion, and indeed, these costs also grew quite a lot, 37% up on Q3 2017.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“บ Netflix Tops Live TV As The Destination For Viewersโ€™ Favorite Shows

Itโ€™s the era of peak TV, and it looks like #Netflix is winning the content wars over traditional TV. In its latest annual Conquering Content study, Hub Entertainment Research finds that TV viewers are becoming pickier about the shows they try, and identify fewer shows as being among their favorites. But hereโ€™s the rub: for the first time, those favourite shows are more likely to be found on Netflix than on live TV.

The study notes that video platforms continue to invest in scripted series, with 5% YoY growth as of August. However, there are stark differences among platforms, with streaming service providers boosting their original scripted series by 46% and premium cable providers by 42%, whereas basic cable and broadcast providers have cut back. (Last year, IHS Markit detailed a 2.3% compound annual decline in scripted hours in the US from broadcast network and cable over the previous 3 years, with online services instead soaring with a compound annual growth rate of 53% in scripted hours over that time span.)

๐ŸŽฅ Netflix's Record-Breaking November

Streaming giant #Netflix set a new record for monthly consumer spending in its mobile app during November, grossing an estimated $86.6 million worldwide on the App Store and Google Play according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data. This figure was 77% higher than the $49 million Sensor Tower estimated the app grossed in November 2017 and 2.3% greater than the $84.7 million users users spent in July of this year, its previous best month for revenue. All told, the app has now grossed more than $1.58 billion globally since it began monetizing in September 2015.

โ“ Have you watched anything on Netflix in the last 30 days?
โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“บ Netflix's 2019 Problem

Although Netflix had a record-breaking November, it's problems can be record-breaking as well. Following #Netflixโ€™s lead, nearly every major video company is moving into the streaming media business. And that means also moving their content off Netflix and onto their own services.

Disney โ€” along with its soon-to-be purchased Fox โ€” is launching its streaming service, Disney+, next year and pulling its content, including Pixar and Marvel films, from Netflix. The combined AT&T/Time Warner, which has licensed its popular TV series โ€œFriendsโ€ to Netflix, may also pull its movies and TV shows from Netflix when its own streaming service gets off the ground at the end of 2019.

That potential loss is part of the reason Netflix has ratcheted up its original content spending lately, and is expected to spend $12 billion to $13 billion on content in 2018 โ€” most of which will go toward original content.

As of October, original content made up 8 percent of content, measured in hours, on Netflix, according to Ampere.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Fastest Mobile Internet

Norway๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด had the fastest mobile #internet download speed, coming in at 67.17 megabits per second (Mbps). Iceland๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ came in a close second with 67.05 Mbps. The United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ came in a distant 43rd with an average download speed of 30.49 Mbps. To stream #Netflix in Ultra HQ quality, a person needs access to 25 Mbps.

๐Ÿ“ฑ 2018's Highest Grossing iPhone Apps

#Netflix was by far the highest grossing #iPhone and #iPad app in 2018, bringing in 790 million dollars. Tencentโ€™s video streaming app was the second highest earning iOS app, grossing 490 million dollars. Netflix blew the other top ten apps out of the water, racking up 62 percent more revenue than second-place iOS app,Tencent.

While Netflix outperformed #Tencent, video streaming and sharing applications did well overall, dominating the top ten list. Seven out of the ten highest grossing iOS apps were video streaming or sharing applications. Notably, half of the apps were owned by Chinese companies like #Baidu, Tencent, and #Alibaba.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“บ Competing for Consumer Attention

The pressure on linear TV isnโ€™t just coming from streaming services such as #Netflix and #Hulu. Both are part of a wider competition for the consumerโ€™s free time with other media formats.

Consumers are now clocking up an average of around 2:20 hours per day on #SocialMedia, rising to around 3 hours among 16-24s. Online and print press, games consoles, music streaming and broadcast radio collectively constitute around 5 hours of a consumerโ€™s day. Thatโ€™s not including the hour and a quarter spent watching online #TV, and the 6 ยพ hours spent online more broadly on a daily basis.

Consumer attention in this crowded environment has become harder to maintain.

Linear TV, does however, have a lot to boast about here. With the exception of social media, linear TV captures the largest share of daily media time among consumers, standing at 18%, significantly above online TVโ€™s 12%. And considering social media engagement happens frequently throughout the day whereas TV engagement is mostly in long durations, thatโ€™s an impressive feat.

๐Ÿ“บ YouTube is Responsible for 37% of All Mobile Internet Traffic

A new report by Sandvine has revealed the applications responsible for the most downstream mobile traffic in the world. Underlining the popularity of streaming services, #YouTube accounts for the most megabytes with 37 percent - an awfully long way ahead of second-placed #Facebook with 8.4 percent and #Snapchat with 8.3 percent. #Netflix, which accounts for the most internet traffic overall, only manages 2.4 percent when it comes to mobile.

๐Ÿ“บ Video Streaming Stats from Nielsen

A new age of media is upon us. As a number of powerful media companies enter the streaming video marketplace in a very big way, choice in this promising arena has never been greater.

The Nielsen report notes that 60% of Americans subscribe to more than one paid #VideoStreaming service. Better stillโ€”especially for platforms entering the streaming marketโ€”is that 93% of U.S. consumers say they will either increase or keep their existing streaming services.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“บ Netflix Sees Unprecedented Growth Amid Pandemic

While no one in their right mind would wish for a global health emergency/economic crisis, itโ€™s hard to make a list of companies that might profit from the current situation and not have #Netflix on that list. A global crisis that forces people to stay home for weeks? Movie theaters, bars, restaurants, and gyms shuttered? No live sports on TV? What else are people supposed to do but cuddle up and watch Tiger King?

Netflixโ€™s latest quarterly results seem to confirm that notion, as the streaming giant added more paid subscribers over the past six months than ever before in its history. Nearly 16 million people signed up for the service in the first quarter alone, with another 10 million subscribers added by the end of June. That brings Netflix's global paid memberships to 193 million, up 26 million since the beginning of 2020. To add some perspective, Netflix added just 12 million subscribers in the first half of 2019 and less than 28 million in the entire year.
