๐Ÿ“ฒ Top Non-Game Apps Worldwide for May 2019 by Downloads

The most downloaded non-game app worldwide for May 2019 was #WhatsApp with more than 64.7 million installs.

#FacebookMessenger was the second most installed non-game app worldwide last month with more than 60.7 million downloads. #Facebook, #TikTok, and #Snapchat made up the rest of the top five most installed non-game apps last month.

Snapchatโ€™s dramatic ranking increase in May came as the result of a popular new gender swap filter added mid-month. The appโ€™s first-time installs increased 2.5x month-over-month from 16.8 million in April to 41.5 million last month, bringing it into the top 10 for overall downloads at No. 5 and making it the most downloaded app on the App Store. It had ranked No. 11 overall and No. 13 on the App Store in April.

๐Ÿ‘ป Snapchatโ€™s Audience Jumps

Data published in #Snapchatโ€™s self-serve tools show that the platformโ€™s advertising audience jumped by a massive 19% in the past three months, reaching a total of 369 million users by July 2019. That translates to an increase of almost 60 million users since April, with growth rates consistent across all age groups.

Itโ€™s not just Snapchatโ€™s data that shows the platform is growing, either. According to App Annie, Snapchat saw a surge in downloads with the release of new #AR filters and its new, faster #Android mobile app, over the past three months.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Facebook Keeps On Growing

Little more than 15 years ago, on February 4, 2004, 19-year old Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg, along with some of his classmates, launched a little website called Thefacebook.

Confined to the Harvard campus at first, after changing its name to just "Facebook" in 2005, the social network was opened to the general public in the fall of 2006, marking the start of one of the most remarkable growth stories in corporate history.

Within three years, the social network added 350 million users and in the summer of 2012 it became the first online service of its kind to reach 1 billion monthly active users. Until today, despite being shrouded in controversy over its (mis)handling of user privacy, #Facebook just keeps on growing. In the past quarter alone, Facebook added 39 million monthly active users, bringing its total user base to an astonishing 2.41 billion.

๐Ÿ“‰ Facebook losing the battle for Customer Satisfaction

Pinterest keeps its top place for another year with 80% customer satisfaction rate in 2019, with no changes from 2018.

Snapchat's customer satisfaction rate was measured for the first time (by ASCI) in 2019 at 71%, just below the #SocialMedia average at 72%.

After the #CambridgeAnalytica scandal, it comes as no surprise that #Facebook is still struggling to revive its plummeting reputation, scoring the worst out of all platforms. They were also accused of dispersing disinformation, censoring political speeches and allowing foreign interference in the US 2016 election and Brexit.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ’ƒ U.S. users spend more than $23 million in TikTok since launch

You canโ€™t read tech news for more than a day or two before you come across an article mentioning #TikTok, the newest massive social media network in the world. Its parent company Bytedance acquired musical.ly last year which led to TikTokโ€™s US launch on August 2nd, 2018. Since then, American users have spent $23.1 million on coins and other virtual goods for the TikTok economy.

Since launching in the United States, the market is responsible for 24% of its in-app purchase revenue. This excludes third party app stores found in China ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ.

Looking at current U.S. demographics, we see TikTok reigns supreme in its ability to attract a younger crowd. Almost 50% of its US ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ active users are aged 20 or younger. #Facebook has always skewed older than the newer social apps, but what stands out most is that it shows a slight edge against #Lasso. Facebook created Lasso to be a direct competitor to TikTok, and while it's early, there's room for improvement.

๐Ÿ“Š TikTok is Making a Splash with the Youth

#Instagram use among younger Americans has been increasing over the past few years, with nearly 7 in 10 (68%) Americans between the ages of 12 and 34 now reporting that they use the popular app. But, while Instagram leads in usage with this age group, the most recent Infinite Dial Report released by Edison Research and Triton Digital reveals that #TikTok is also making a splash with youth.

New to the report this year, TikTok has done well in brand awareness, with nearly two-thirds (64%) of the more than 1,500 Americans (ages 12+) surveyed saying they are aware of the social media app. That said, only 11% are using the platform. And, although this pales in comparison to the usage of more established social media platforms like #Facebook (63%), Instagram (41%) and #Snapchat (31%), TikTok adoption has grown quickly since its release in the US in late 2017.

๐Ÿ“ฑ TikTok is the 3rd Favourite Social Platform Among US Teens

When it comes to which #SocialMedia platforms resonate most with US teens, the battle between #Snapchat and #Instagram continues. Snapchat has remained the favourite among teens since 2016. However, Instagram, which is currently the favourite social platform for almost one-third (31%) of the 5,200 US teens surveyed.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ—ž News Use Across Social Media Platforms in 2020

As #SocialMedia companies struggle to deal with misleading information on their platforms about the #USElection, the #COVID19 pandemic and more, a large portion of Americans continue to rely on these sites for news. About half of US adults (53%) say they get news from social media โ€œoftenโ€ or โ€œsometimes,โ€ and this use is spread out across a number of different sites, according to a Pew Research Center survey.

Among 11 social media sites asked about as a regular source of news, #Facebook sits at the top, with about a third (36%) of Americans getting news there regularly. #YouTube comes next, with 23% of US adults regularly getting news there. #Twitter serves as a regular news source for 15% of US adults.

Other social media sites are less likely to be regular news sources. About one-in-ten Americans or fewer report regularly getting news on #Instagram (11%), #Reddit (6%), #Snapchat (4%), #LinkedIn (4%), #TikTok (3%), #WhatsApp (3%), #Tumblr (1%) and #Twitch (1%).

These lower percentages for news use are in some cases related to the fact that fewer Americans report using them at all, compared with the shares who use Facebook and YouTube.

Social Platforms: they all look the same now

The fact that all #SocialMedia platforms are starting to look the same points at the idea of some platforms are just features unless they evolve.

For example, #Snapchat had to evolve from being a platform for โ€˜Storiesโ€™ to a camera/AR platform, otherwise, it had no chance against #Facebook & #Instagram Stories attack.

Now, #Clubhouse has the same problem. It has turned into a feature that other platforms are just adding to their products โ€” yes, you can call it copying too.
