β€‹β€‹πŸ—£ The State of Chinese Voice Assistants

China is the second-largest consumer market in the world, hitting $4.3T in consumer expenditure in 2016 alone (for reference, the US ranked first with $12.5T, and Japan third with $2.7T).

The Chinese smart home market will reach nearly $23B in 2018, according to Juniper Research. #SmartSpeakers and #AI voice assistants are becoming an integral part of that.

Now that smart speakers are becoming commonplace, the early entrant, #Amazon, is losing its market share β€” and not just to its rival #Google, but to newer players emerging in China.

❓ Do you own a smart speaker?
β€‹β€‹πŸŽΆ Music Industry Streaming Revenues

Revenues from streaming #Music grew 28% YoY to $3.4 billion for the first half of 2018.

This broad category includes revenues from subscription services (such as paid versions of #Spotify, #AppleMusic, #Amazon, #TIDAL, and others), digital and customized radio services (like #Pandora, #SiriusXM, and other Internet radio), and ad-supported on-demand streaming services (such as #YouTube, #Vevo, and ad-supported Spotify). The overwhelming majority of the industry’s revenue growth during the period came from streaming music.

Paid subscriptions have become the biggest format for music by revenue. Year-over-year growth of 33% brought total subscription revenues to $2.5 billion. So ΒΎ of recording industry revenue came from streaming, and ΒΎ of that from paid subscriptions. Despite far few users, subscription streaming vastly out performed ad-supported revenues.

❓ Which one do you prefer?
β€‹β€‹πŸ‘€ Facebook Portal

#Facebook just unveiled Portal, a home video chat camera with auto-zoom & built-in #Amazon Alexa - for the people who still trust Facebook!

With #FacebookPortal, you can’t watch #YouTube; there’s no web browser; #WhatsApp and #Instagram are nowhere to be found; and you can’t send or receive normal Facebook messages, even if they’re video recordings. If you buy the Portal, you have to really want to video chat with other people on Facebook, and do so from one room in your home, on something other than the phone or laptop or tablet that you likely already have. (TheVerge)

With all the privacy issues surrounding Facebook, Portal seems like a stupidly brave bet from them.

πŸš€ @PerspectiveIX

❓ Will you purchase a Facebook Portal to place inside your home?
β€‹β€‹πŸ˜ Netflix is Responsible for 15% of Global Internet Traffic

According to a new report by Sandvine, the web application responsible for the world's most downstream traffic is #Netflix with 15%. #Youtube isn't too far behind with 11.4% and further back but still with a significant share, #Amazon Prime Video is responsible for 3.7%.

❓ Do you a Netflix account?
πŸ”ˆ Alexa Rules American Smart Homes

Still capitalizing on its first mover advantage, #Amazon continues to dominate the smart speaker landscape in the United States. According to a survey conducted by research firm Strategy Analytics in July and August 2018, the e-commerce giant accounted for 63% of the U.S. installed base at the time, beating Google (17%) and Apple (4%) by quite a margin.

Amazon had started the smart speaker craze in November 2014 with the release of the first Amazon Echo. The Consumer Technology Association expects smart speaker sales to amount to $3.2 billion in the U.S. this year, up 64% over the 2017 total.

πŸ’Έ Amazon's HQs

#Amazon’s relationship to its hometown, Seattle, WA, has been complicated at best. The company has poured close to $4 billion in real estate spending into the city. Amazon is currently employing 45,000 people who have an average annual salary of $110,000. Critics say these moves have driven up the cost of living in the city. While the tech giant has grown, it has also deferred 54 million in state taxes alone, due to a high-tech corporate incentive in Washington state.

πŸ‘€ e-Commerce App vs Web Engagement

Using the top four e-commerce brands, here Verto dives into what form of traffic was driving the majority of their visits. Unsurprisingly, Web (including mobile & desktop) continues to dominate e-commerce reach and time spent. 179 million unique monthly visitors access #Amazon at least once via Web which is 97% of Amazon’s user base for September 2018; only 53% of those users, 98 million, access it via the application. Even in terms of engagement, the average user on Amazon spent slightly more than 5 hours on web browsers compared to slightly under an hour on the app.

πŸ’° Amazon Challenges Ad Duopoly

According to a new eMarketer report, digital ad spending in the United States will exceed traditional media spending, e.g. TV, print and radio ads, for the first this year. Boosted by the ongoing mobile #advertising boom, digital ad spending is expected to grow 19 percent to $129 billion in 2019.

While the digital ad market is still dominated by #Google and #Facebook, who account for roughly 60 percent of total spending, a third company is challenging the de-facto duopoly of the world’s largest search and social media companies. Online retail behemoth #Amazon has quietly built a billion-dollar ad business which is growing at a rate of 50 percent per year.

πŸ“Ί Video Streaming Stats from Nielsen

A new age of media is upon us. As a number of powerful media companies enter the streaming video marketplace in a very big way, choice in this promising arena has never been greater.

The Nielsen report notes that 60% of Americans subscribe to more than one paid #VideoStreaming service. Better stillβ€”especially for platforms entering the streaming marketβ€”is that 93% of U.S. consumers say they will either increase or keep their existing streaming services.

β€‹β€‹πŸ” World’s 10 Most Valuable Brands in 2020

For the eighth year running, #Apple is at the top of the list of most valuable brands in the world, keeping its lead over top companies like #Amazon, #Microsoft and #Google, according to Interbrand’s latest annual rankings. Although there has been some shifting around in positions, all of the brands in the top 10 last year remained there this year.

Of the 43% of brands that benefited from a lift in value this year, #Amazon (60%) and #Microsoft (53%) were the fastest risers. #Spotify also had a significant increase, up 52% to $8.4 billion (#70).

Other fast-risers this year include:
- #Netflix: +41% to $12.7 billion (#41);
- #Adobe: +41% to $18.2 billion (#27);
- #PayPal: +38% to $10.5 billion (#60);
- #Apple: +38% to $323 billion (#1); and
- #Salesforce: +34% to $10.8 billion (#58).

This year, five brands dropped off the top 100 list, making room for five new entrants. One of those new entrants is #Instagram, which makes its debut to the list at #19 with a brand value of $26.1 billion. #YouTube (#30) joins Instagram on the list of new entrants with a brand value of $17.3 billion. Both of these brands are also favorites among social media marketers.

The remaining three new entrants are:

- #Tesla (#40; $12.8 billion);
- #JohnnieWalker (#98; $4.6 billion); and
- #Zoom (#100; $4.5 billion)
