The Taliban have barred girls in Afghanistan from continuing their education beyond the sixth grade. Yet many girls have found alternative ways to learn through online education and technology.
In Herat, Code to Inspire moved its programming classes online and provided laptops and internet packages to around 100 students.
In 2024, the SOLA—School of Leadership, Afghanistan, launched a remote-learning program that allows girls to access daily lessons in Dari, Pashto, and English through a smartphone and messaging platform. By 2025, the program had reached more than 25,000 learners.
Girls themselves have also played a role in creating educational opportunities. Zhala, a young Afghan woman, helped establish an online university where, according to a 2025 report, more than 4,000 women and girls were studying free of charge, with around 150 volunteers supporting the initiative.
The Taliban’s sweeping restrictions have effectively denied girls access to education beyond the sixth grade. But efforts to continue learning persist.

Faezah Gorgij, 27, grew up in Lar Bala, a village in Sistan and Baluchestan Province with limited access to education. The village has only a primary school, so students must travel long distances to continue their studies elsewhere.
In interviews with Iranian domestic media, Faezah described returning to education at 25 after a seven-year break. She said she prepared for the university entrance exam largely on her own, sometimes studying for up to 17 hours a day. She also described studying without electricity or running water and traveling to the city every two weeks to take practice exams.
In 2025, she was admitted to Iranshahr University of Medical Sciences in Sistan and Baluchestan Province.
Faezah’s achievement is remarkable. But her story also highlights two sides of the same reality: her determination to pursue an education, and the barriers girls in underserved areas of Iran continue to face—including limited access to schools and transportation, inadequate basic infrastructure, and financial constraints.
Girls’ education is a right—not a privilege determined by where they are born.

The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center has received an audio recording accompanied by video footage of Ehsan Rezapour, in which he describes being beaten and subjected to electric shocks during detention. The footage shows severe bruising around his eye and injuries to his face and body.
Ehsan Rezapour, a 35-year-old resident of Bonn, Germany, was detained after returning to Iran and continued to face summons for questioning and threats to publish his forced confessions following his release. Amid these pressures, he set himself on fire in Tehran on March 29, 2026, and died in a hospital in the same city on April 6.
Rezapour had returned to Iran on February 8, 2026, to visit his family and child and attend memorial ceremonies marking 40 days since the deaths of friends killed during the January protests. His passport was confiscated at the airport, and interrogators questioned him about his participation in protests in Germany. According to people close to him, Basij forces arrested him on March 10. After two days during which his whereabouts were unknown, he was abandoned near Fardis with severe injuries. They said he continued to fear that his forced confessions would be released.

Ten people. Ten real stories. All imprisoned over debt—construction loans, bounced cheques, unpaid mehriyeh—under laws that jail people for being unable to pay, collected and documented by IHRDC.
https://iranhrdc.org/category/english/publications/witness-testimony/
Case 04 — Reza (Pseudonym)
“I ran a poultry and meat distribution business. When I went bankrupt, I had to close the shop, and creditors kept filing complaints. As soon as I paid one off, another would file a complaint. At first, my wife hadn’t planned to leave me, but under pressure from her family, she left and took legal action to collect the 72 gold coins owed under our marriage settlement (mehriyeh). I spent three months in prison before my relatives took out loans to secure my release. I’m still paying installments on the marriage settlement alongside child support for my daughter, and I’m two gold coins behind on the payments.”

According to information received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC), Alireza Sepahi and other defendants in the “Alikhani Square” case in Isfahan were tortured during interrogations by IRGC Intelligence to extract confessions. Sepahi, who has been sentenced to death on three counts and approximately 16 years in prison, spent two separate periods of 24 and 16 days in solitary confinement. Other defendants, including Ahmadreza Saeidi, were reportedly subjected to electric shocks with stun guns.
According to the same information, officers gained entry to the family home on January 13 by deceiving its occupants. During Sepahi’s arrest, they shot him four times in the legs from the front, despite his being unarmed and approximately 40 officers being present. His 14-year-old sister was also arrested and tortured to obtain statements against her brother. His mother, Somayeh Afshar, was summoned on the promise that her son would be released, but was then arrested herself. She is currently held in Dolatabad Prison in Isfahan. Reports also indicate that the mothers of some defendants were assaulted in front of their children to force them to confess.
The defendants face charges of (Moharebeh) “waging war against God,” (Baghy) “armed rebellion,” and “sowing corruption on Earth.” However, according to the information received, knives found in the home were recorded as weapons, and no footage of the alleged killings has been presented despite the presence of surveillance cameras at the scene. The information further indicates that torture and assaults on defendants’ family members were used to extract forced confessions and build the case against them.
Sepahi previously suffered a heart attack while being transferred for execution and was returned to prison after being hospitalized. According to the latest information, Branch 39 of the Supreme Court initially ordered a stay of execution and subsequently granted a retrial. However, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court reportedly rejected the retrial request without examining the merits of the case and referred it to the Office for the Enforcement of Sentences. Sepahi remains at risk of execution, while his lawyers continue their efforts to halt the execution and secure a fresh review of his case.

New information received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC) indicates that the three Boueri brothers were tortured, pressured to confess, and denied full access to their case files through their lawyers. Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Mehrdad Boueri, 35, to death; Milad Bouyeri, 37, to 25 years in prison; and Ali Bouyeri, 28, to five years in prison.
The three brothers, who were shopkeepers in Isfahan, were arrested on January 24, 2026, in connection with the January protests and spent approximately two months in solitary confinement. According to the information received, their family could still see bruises on their bodies during their first visit after this period. All three had lost significant weight and were limping and struggling to walk. Reports also indicate that the mothers of some defendants in the same case were assaulted in front of their children to force them to confess.
Under pressure, Ali Boueri was forced to write that he had thrown stones at officers. Mehrdad was accused of carrying a weapon, although, according to the information received, no independent evidence was presented to substantiate the allegation. Decorative swords with blunt blades and a video from approximately ten years ago showing Mehrdad cutting his birthday cake with a large knife were reportedly cited as evidence against him.
Mehrdad faced charges including (Moharebeh) “waging war against God,” assembly and collusion against national security, “inciting the public,” and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Milad also faced a charge of (Moharebeh) “waging war against God.” According to the information received, the defendants were formally informed of the charges at their detention facilities, including in their cells, and their lawyers were unable to review most of the case file before trial.
