Based on published reports, Hadi Abbasian, Mohsen Babaeian, and Mohammad Amin Mandani have been sentenced to death by Revolutionary Courts, while Omid Goudarzvand Chegini’s death sentence has been upheld. Reports of torture, denial of access to counsel, and a lack of transparency regarding the evidence and proceedings have heightened concerns about violations of these prisoners’ rights.
Hadi Abbasian, 38, a resident of Shirvan in North Khorasan Province, was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Bojnourd. He was formally notified of the sentence in Shirvan Prison on October 5, 2026. Abbasian, who posted videos supporting protesters during the January 2026 protests, was arrested in April–May 2026. According to published reports, he was denied access to counsel and subjected to torture in custody. Reports also indicate that he was hospitalized after sustaining physical injuries and that state media broadcast statements presented as his confessions, which human rights sources have described as coerced.
Mohsen Babaeian, who was arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests, was sentenced to death on a charge of (Moharebeh) “waging war against God” by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. He is held in Greater Tehran Prison. Although he has been notified of the sentence, clear information about the evidence cited by the court, his access to counsel, and the arguments presented in his defense remains unavailable.
The same court branch sentenced Mohammad Amin Mandani, also held in Greater Tehran Prison, to death on a charge of “cooperation with hostile states.” His lawyer was notified of the sentence on September 29, 2026; the recirculation of the news in recent days does not indicate that a new sentence has been issued. Mandani was arrested in March–April 2026, and reports indicate that his access to counsel was restricted during the early stages of the case. Among the allegations against him is that he shared the locations of certain sites. Details of the court’s evidence and his defense have not been made public.
In a separate case, reports indicate that the death sentence of Omid Goudarzvand Chegini, 37, held in Choubindar Prison in Qazvin, has been upheld. Branch 2 of the Qazvin Revolutionary Court issued the original sentence in a case concerning damage to the entrance of the provincial governor’s office. Arrested on January 8, 2026, he has denied participating in damaging or setting fire to the entrance. According to human rights reports, he spent approximately 40 days in solitary confinement at an IRGC Intelligence detention facility, was tortured to extract a confession, and was denied access to a lawyer of his choosing.
These reported sentences underscore the need to halt executions and independently investigate allegations of torture and violations of defense rights. Effective access to a lawyer of their choosing and the opportunity to challenge their sentences through fair proceedings are fundamental rights of all these prisoners.

Sima Noori was a child when war drove her family from Kunduz, Afghanistan, to Iran. Years later, with a master's degree in international relations, she returned to Afghanistan as a representative of migrants at the Loya Jirga, determined to help rebuild her country.
She went on to work in the energy sector, a field where women were rarely seen. By her account, that visibility made her a target of persistent threats from the Taliban and other extremist groups. She and her father were targeted in an assassination attempt, and her father was wounded.
Through all those years, Sima never gave up on education. She set up literacy classes for women and helped establish three schools for more than 600 undocumented migrant children. That work came at a heavy cost: legal pressure, confiscated documents, and ultimately, being forced to leave once again.
Today, Sima lives in Norway. In her words, "My geography has changed, not my mission." She is a co-founder of the Hazara Women's Global Movement and campaigns for the recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
For more than five years, she has run a shelter in Pakistan that has given refuge to some 500 to 600 people, including women heads of household, protesters, survivors of war, and members of religious and ethnic minorities.
Her story carries even greater weight at a time when girls in Afghanistan are still barred from education beyond primary school. For Sima, justice means a day when no girl is denied her dreams or her right to education because of her gender.
We stand with Sima. Denying girls an education is a flagrant violation of human rights, and the international community must not remain silent.

Omid Ghanouni, a 17-year-old from Arjanak village in Khansar County, Isfahan Province, died following his arrest and reported beating. His family gathered outside Vist police station on Thursday, October 8, 2026, demanding accountability. His funeral was held on Friday, October 9, with a large turnout.
According to Iran International, citing an informed source, Omid’s father saw his son in critical condition at the courthouse the day after his arrest and asked that he be taken to hospital. He even offered to be detained in his son’s place, but judicial authorities refused.
According to the same report, on the evening of October 5, Omid was dragged from his home and handed over to police following an argument with a member of the Basij militia. The informed source said he was beaten, including with a rifle butt, during his arrest. The following day, after he fell from a chair, his body was taken to Fatemiyeh Hospital in Khansar.
The informed source said medical staff identified internal bleeding caused by severe beating as the cause of death. The source also reported visible bruising on Omid’s face and body, as well as obstacles to obtaining his death certificate.

Paniz is seventeen. She dreamed of studying interior design in high school, but because the program wasn’t offered in her hometown, she enrolled in a vocational high school and studied accounting instead. Starting in seventh grade, she worked at a hair salon alongside her studies, learning keratin hair treatments to help ease her mother’s financial burden. After escaping domestic violence, her mother had been left to raise the family on her own.
After six years, Paniz cut off the hair that had grown to her waist and sold it to a hair broker through Divar, an online classifieds platform in Iran, for 30 million tomans (approximately $150 at the average exchange rate over the past six months). Her mother was saddened by the decision, and Paniz, heartbroken that she had been unable to make her happy, moved from one sorrow to another.
Her classmates saw her beauty as something lost. Before they recognized her courage in fighting to survive, or her resourcefulness in turning her hair into a means of survival, they noticed only its absence. It was as though the world mourned the loss of a girl’s conventional beauty before acknowledging what she had sacrificed simply to get by.
Paniz says:
“When the broker placed the first pair of scissors near the roots of my hair, the tears began to fall uncontrollably. I wish I could cut away helplessness, too, and throw it aside.
But hair grows back. So do we.
I will keep standing until the day women whose dreams have been stolen are free, girls who have been left without support are safe, and children are no longer forced to carry life’s burdens before their time. I will keep standing so that no girl like me is denied her final exams because of a coat of nail polish or a few strands of hair showing beneath her headscarf.
My hair will grow back. We will bloom again. We will not sell our dreams. No pair of scissors has the right to cut away our hopes for freedom and justice.”
All seventeen-year-old Paniz dreams of is a safe roof over her head: a home of her own, where fear does not dictate daily life and peace is not an unattainable dream. A place where safety is an unconditional right.

An execution ends a life. For the family left behind, the suffering continues. Behind every number is a person whose hopes, relationships, and future have been cut short.
October 10, World Day Against the Death Penalty, is a reminder that everyone has the right to life. We call for an end to executions in Iran and the abolition of the death penalty.

During the International Day of the Girl campaign, we heard the stories of girls and women striving for education, choice, independence, and the right to have their voices heard.
We learned that resistance takes many forms—from challenging coercion and control over their bodies and clothing, to pursuing education, building businesses, participating in sports, and documenting experiences of repression.
We learned that education creates the opportunity to choose one’s future. Being denied education can also limit economic independence, social participation, and the ability to make decisions about one’s own future.
The circumstances in Iran and Afghanistan are not the same, but in both contexts, girls face serious barriers to accessing their rights. Effective support requires understanding these differences and responding to their real needs.
We learned that individual courage should not replace collective responsibility. Girls should not have to be heroes simply to enjoy their most basic rights.
And we learned that listening must lead to action: supporting education and independence, creating meaningful opportunities, ensuring girls have a voice in decision-making, and advancing their rights and demands.
Every girl has the right to learn, choose, and build her future without fear.

Human rights lawyer Amirsalar Davoudi has been arrested after speaking publicly about the case of his executed client, Alireza Sepahi, and faces the possibility of more serious national security charges. He was arrested on October 11, 2026, while attending the Revolutionary Court in Isfahan to defend Mahshad Kashani, Sepahi’s wife. Based on published reports, Kashani and Sepahi married in a telephone ceremony on October 4, one day before his execution, while both were imprisoned.
On October 13, Mizan News Agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Republic’s judiciary, quoted Isfahan’s chief justice as saying that Davoudi had been transferred to Dastgerd Prison on charges of disseminating false information online, inciting people to kill one another with the intent to disrupt national security, and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic. The judicial official cited Davoudi’s posts and an audio recording of the couple’s marriage ceremony as grounds for taking action against him, claiming that the content was “false.” The report provided no independent evidence to substantiate that claim.
Isfahan’s chief justice also threatened to bring charges against Davoudi under Article 4 of the Law on Increased Penalties for Espionage and Cooperation with the Zionist Regime if investigators establish that he sent the audio recording to Iran International and determine that its content was, in the official’s words, “false.” According to the same official, this matter remains under investigation.
Davoudi’s arrest comes amid a broader pattern in Iran in which lawyers representing political prisoners and prisoners of conscience themselves face prosecution, arrest, prison sentences, and bans on practicing law for defending their clients and exposing violations of their rights. These pressures undermine lawyers’ independence and further restrict defendants’ access to independent legal counsel and their right to a defense.

Babak Moradifar, a legal scholar and political activist, has reported on Instagram that his case has been referred to the criminal sentence enforcement office at Tehran’s Shahid Moghaddas Prosecutor’s Office. He says he continues to suffer from an illness contracted in detention and expects to report to prison in the coming days.
Moradifar was previously sentenced to 30 months in prison by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Amouzad, in an initial ruling. His attendance at a memorial ceremony marking the seventh day after Khosrow Alikordi’s death and his support for the January 2026 protests were among the activities cited as grounds for the charge of “assembly and collusion with intent to undermine internal security through disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”
In his latest post, Moradifar said he has yet to recover from an infection he contracted at Greater Tehran Central Penitentiary. He previously reported being beaten, sustaining a serious leg injury, and being denied medical treatment and hospital transfers during detention. He was released on bail on February 26, 2026, to continue treatment. His case has now been referred for sentence enforcement while, by his account, his health problems persist.
