Post 1 / 4 — Death in Custody
Debt is not a crime. But in Iran, it can take a life.
In October 2022, during an alleged riot at Lakan Prison in Rasht, three debtors died under suspicious circumstances: Aref Ashouri, Mohammad (Saeed) Anoushenia, and Milan Derakhshan. None of them were imprisoned for committing a crime — only for being unable to pay a debt.
This is the first in a series introducing "Debtor Imprisonment in Iran" — a data hub by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center documenting financial prisoners over the past three decades.

Through Her Eyes starts today.
Girls in this region are spoken about constantly. In reports, in resolutions, in headlines written by people who have never met them. They are counted, cited, and legislated over. They are almost never asked.
So we are asking.
From August 18 to International Day of the Girl on October 11, IHRDC is publishing eight weeks of stories from girls across Iran, Afghanistan and the broader Middle East — in their own words, wherever it is safe to tell them.
What you'll find here is not a catalogue of suffering. It is girls talking about school, and friendship, and music, and what they intend to do with their lives — alongside what has been taken from them. Both are true at once. Flattening one into the other is its own kind of erasure.
We're not going to tell you this campaign reopens a school or lifts a ban. It doesn't. But a girl who is heard is harder to disappear, and being heard is where every other right starts. That much we can do, and we intend to do it well.
Follow along. Share what stays with you.

Heidar Nekoosirat, an activist from Mashhad, is currently held in Ward 104 of Vakilabad prison in Mashhad. He was arrested in connection with the protests of 8 and 9 January, 2026.
Mr. Nekoosirat has diabetes and kidney failure and has already lost sight in one eye. Given his medical condition and the circumstances of his detention, the vision in his remaining eye is also at risk.
He has repeatedly reported his condition to prison and judicial authorities and has offered to cover the cost of his own treatment in order to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison for surgery and care. To date he has received only verbal assurances, and no effective treatment has been provided. Requests for conditional release under electronic monitoring have likewise been denied.
Under international standards, including the “Nelson Mandela Rules,” the state is responsible for providing prisoners with adequate medical care, and denying a prisoner treatment amounts to inhuman treatment.

Ghaem (Arian) Hosseini, who was arrested in connection to the January 2026 protests in Isfahan, was executed on Thursday morning, August 20. His execution was based on national security-related charges and the account presented by the Islamic Republic’s judicial authorities in a case marred by serious reported violations of the right to a fair trial. Mizan News Agency, which is affiliated with Iran’s judiciary, announced the execution, stating that Hosseini’s death sentence had been upheld by the Supreme Court. The location of the execution was not disclosed.
The case, commonly referred to as the “Alikhani Square” case, stems from events on January 8, 2026, during protests in the Malek-Shahr area of Isfahan, in which four police officers died. Without providing evidence that could be independently verified, the Islamic Republic’s judiciary accused Hosseini of involvement in the events that night and of setting fire to property belonging to a charity. He was sentenced to death on charges including “waging war against God” (moharebeh), “corruption on Earth” (efsad-e fel-arz), acting against national security, and destruction of public property. Mizan also cited statements and confessions attributed to defendants in the case, while no independent information has been made available about the circumstances under which those statements were obtained or whether the defendants had effective access to legal counsel during interrogation.
Hosseini is the fifth person to be executed in connection with the case. Erfan Esfandiari and Golmohammad Mohammadi were executed on July 19, while Abolfazl Sepahi and Amirhossein Safari were executed on July 28. Fifteen defendants were initially sentenced to death. According to published information, one of those sentences was overturned by a higher judicial authority, while the death sentences of the other 14 defendants were upheld. Several defendants in the case therefore remain at risk of execution.
Reports concerning the proceedings indicate that defense lawyers faced restrictions on effective access to case files, were unable to obtain copies of court rulings, and that hearings were conducted by videoconference. Families were also reportedly kept uninformed about the details of the charges and evidence, while the court disregarded evidence presented by the defense. Under these circumstances, the charges used as the basis for the death sentences were not adjudicated through proceedings that met fundamental fair-trial guarantees.

Girls killed in the crackdown of January 2026
• During the crackdown of January 2026, the Islamic Republic’s security forces
killed thousands of Iranians. Among them were girls and young women who had gone out to protest peacefully.
