Ali Akbar Zar, a 39-year-old political prisoner and a father of two, was arrested on June 16, 2023, and transferred to Evin prison after posting critical content on his Instagram page. His indictment was issued in August by Branch Six of the Evin Prosecutor's Office, and he has been charged with insulting the Prophet, insulting Supreme Leader Khamenei and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.
Following Mr. Zar's complaint against prison conditions, he was barred from having family visits and was sent to solitary confinement as punishment. The executions of several political prisoners in recent days have raised concerns that other prisoners, such as Mr. Zar, could be executed without prior knowledge. Insulting the Prophet, one of Mr. Zar’s charges, carries the death penalty under Iranian law.

Hamideh (Shimin) Zeraei, a former political prisoner and one of the detainees of the 2022 nationwide protests, was sentenced on Monday, March 17, to one year and six months in prison and 178 lashes. She is currently serving her exile sentence in Rasht and was convicted by Branch 104 of the Rasht Criminal Court 2, presided over by Judge Shadpour. She received nine months in prison and 74 lashes for disrupting public order, nine months in prison for resisting law enforcement officers, 74 lashes for insulting an officer on duty, and 30 lashes for causing minor bodily harm. Out of this sentence, nine months in prison and 74 lashes are enforceable.

This ruling was issued after she refused to comply with the mandatory hijab during her court hearing. She was subsequently arrested on February 3, 2025, in connection with this case and was released about a month later from Lakan Prison on bail. After her release, she stated that her arrest was based on a false charge of disrupting public order and disobeying judicial orders and that she was harassed by security forces at the Rasht Prosecutor’s Office before being detained. She also reported being beaten while in custody at Lakan Prison.

She was originally arrested in relation to the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests and was released on February 7, 2023, following the issuance of a general amnesty order. However, she was re-arrested on May 29, 2023, at her home and transferred to Kachouii Prison. Branch 1 of the Karaj Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Asaf Hosseini, sentenced her to one year in prison, two years of exile in Rasht, a two-year travel ban, and a two-year internet ban. Her sentence was ultimately reduced to nine months after she accepted the verdict, which she completed on February 22, 2024.

On Thursday, November 27, 2025, Islamic Republic security forces raided the birthday party of Ali Shadman, an actor, and detained him along with more than 20 guests. Those arrested included Parsa Pirouzfar, Sahar Dolatshahi, Setareh Pesyani, Ahmad Selgi, Mehran Miri, Aida Panahandeh, and Nahal Dashti.

Ali Shadman and Setareh Pesyani remain in custody. According to sources, Parsa Pirouzfar suffered distress during the raid and was taken to the hospital.

Fars News Agency, which is affiliated with the IRGC, reported that during what it called a “special intelligence operation” at a “night party,” several artists were arrested, alleging that 38 liters of homemade alcohol were found at the gathering.

According to Iran International, Ali Shadman and six others are now facing charges at the Guidance Prosecutor’s Office, including violating public morality, promoting vice, consuming alcohol, and possessing alcoholic beverages. Additional cases with various charges have also been opened for the other detainees.

In September 2025, after receiving a special jury award at the “Negah” festival, Ali Shadman dedicated the prize to Hossein Mohammadi, an actor and political prisoner. Sources say this gesture put him under pressure from the Islamic Republic’s security agencies.
