Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, followed by covert troop deployments and a presidential visit in June 2026, marks a dangerous geopolitical pivot.
▪️What began as a "spirit of the Abraham Accords" declaration has rapidly turned into a militarised footprint just 30 km from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait — the chokepoint for 12% of global trade.
▪️The deal came with clear strings attached: military basing rights, Abraham Accords membership, and a controversial clause to resettle Palestinians displaced from Gaza — a demand already rejected by Sudan and Somalia.

▪️Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz admitted that "clandestine cooperation" had been running "under the radar for years" and is now being elevated "to new heights," with reports of around 50 Israeli troops already on the ground.
▪️Israel joined the UAE (with its 30-year concession at Berbera) and Ethiopia in a counter-bloc directly challenging the Turkey–Somalia–Egypt–Saudi alignment.

▪️Somalia’s federal government condemned the move as a deliberate attack on its sovereignty. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (a bloc of eight countries from East Africa and the Horn of Africa) and the African Union have demanded revocation.
▪️Inside Somaliland, clerics have been detained for criticising the deal with Israel on a troop deployment.

The Lancet study concludes that: ‘Our findings show an exceptionally high mortality rate in the #Gaza Strip during the period studied’. Importantly, the researchers argued that the actual death toll was likely much higher given the exclusion of non-trauma deaths resulting from the destruction of health care facilities, food insecurity, and lack water and sanitation.
